Thehe Village & School

Located within the Humla district is the village of Thehe, a five hour walk from Simikot. Over 450 families live in overcrowded conditions, with no running water or sanitation facilities. The villagers are predominantly from the Chetri ethic group, they are Hindu and also follow the lead of a number of local shamans.

The families of Thehe eke out a living from the limited arable land surrounding the village and some of the men find jobs as laborers and porters in the greater Humla region. There is a small overcrowded school and medical center. The town water supply comes from one outlet and there are no toilet facilities in the village.

The children in Thehe have limited access to education. Only select children are able to attend the local school. Most work on farms with their families to provide food. The local school operates with virtually no resources and Thehe families do not have the means to send their children outside the area to continue their education in a secondary school.

In the Humla region, only 2.6% of children pass from Primary to Secondary school. The literacy rate in the region is 27.1% (female 11.8%, male 41.3%).

NCF has made a commitment to Thehe Village and its children. In addition to supporting the Thehe school, our major project is the creation of a new school and boarding facility in the neighboring town of Simikot.

You can sponsor a child from Thehe

Sponsorship covers schooling, supplies, boarding and

living expenses.

The NCF strategy in Thehe Village:

*Employed a native villager to be the NCF representative in Thehe (Suresh Bohora).

*Established a committee consisting of respected leaders from the village to provide guidance for the village development.

*Planning and constructing two toilet and washing stations for the village using bio-gas technology. Thehe will be a leading village in the region with this technology.

*In response to feedback from the teachers in the school, NCF is working with the villagers to provide:

- School supplies, teaching materials, books, stationery, etc.

- Nutrition and health programs for children who attend school

- Provide running water and other amenities to the school

*Currently operating a boarding hostel for 26 Thehe girls to attend school in Simikot, a short trek from their home village Thehe, where higher quality education is accessible.

*Buiilding and developing our own school in Simikot to serve a greater number of students.

*We are committed to focusing our education efforts on girls and women, to increase the girls’ chances for self sufficiency throughout life and close the education gap between men and women.
